Cigarette packs sold in the US next year will be required to carry images of a corpse and cancer-ridden lungs in a change that has triggered a legal protest from the tobacco industry.
The Food and Drug Administration yesterday picked nine graphic anti-smoking images from an initial list of 36 first proposed last year.
The images – which also include rotting teeth and a man exhaling smoke through a hole in his neck – must cover the top half of all packs sold in the US from October next year.
It is the most radical change in the marketing of cigarettes in the US in more than a quarter of a century. More than 20pc of the adult population in the US smokes and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, smoking-related diseases kill 443,000 people each year.
The move, first stipulated by a law passed two years ago, has prompted a legal fight from many of the tobacco industry’s biggest companies.
