EdExcel, the training body which awards the qualifications, has had to lay on extra staff to deal with the number of people picking up a Level 2 certificate – thought to be the largest graduation of its kind in the UK.

The retailer is on track to train 100,000 people by 2011 through its academy, with plans to train cleaners and checkout staff to the same level.

Norman Pickavance, group human resources director, said the retailer could gain a “competitive advantage” over its rivals by having the best trained staff. “We also want Morrisons to be seen as the best employer in the food trade, and training forms an important part of our offer to employees,” he said.

The move follows several employers that have ramped up the training they offer to employees, including Flybe and McDonald’s which began accrediting their own qualifications in-house in 2008.

Morrisons employs 125,000 people across 425 stores in the UK.
