At this time of year many people dust off their credit cards, switch on their computers, and get online to do a bit of Christmas shopping, as there is plenty of choice, great value for money, and the ease and convenience of shopping from home to benefit from when shopping online.

However, according to reports an increasing number of people have been getting their credit cards out and getting online this year, with the bad weather and snow stopping many from commencing with their plans to head out to the shops to do their Christmas shopping. Heavy snowfalls, ice, and freezing temperatures has put people off from heading out to the shops to get their Christmas gifts and shopping.

Disruptions to public transport resulting from the bad weather also stopped many people from going out to do their shopping, and those that have access to cars and vehicles did not want to risk having an accident on the icy roads. Some staff at shops could not get into work because of the weather, and all in all the weather has caused chaos for both shoppers and retailers.

The new will have come as a blow for High Street retailers, as it will have impacted on the increase in profits that they would hope to get at this time of the year. However, for Internet retailers the new has been great, as they have seen a surge in sales and profits from those deciding to avoid the bad weather conditions and shop from their own home.

One official said: “Consumers have little interest in venturing into a winter wonderland; instead it’s all about surfing online in the comfort of their own home, with key multichannel retailers like John Lewis reporting a trend of flat sales in their stores, while online sales have seen a dramatic increase of 62 per cent.”
