With the end of 2010 in sight, Discover has announced the new 5% Cashback Bonus categories for most of the 2011 calendar. Discover More holders, much like those with the Chase Freedom and Citibank Dividend Platinum Select cash rewards credit cards, earn this bonus cash on very specific rotating categories, usually on a quarterly basis.

Card holders also earn 1% cash back on all other purchases year round, and for a limited time, new users can earn an additional $100 credit with Discover More after spending $500 in the first 3 months.

These are the upcoming categories, along with the signup dates for each bonus (yes, unfortunately cardholders need to sign up in advance, the bonuses aren’t automatic):

  • Jan – Mar: Airlines, car rentals, hotels, cruises, restaurants (on up to $800 in purchases). Signup is open now.
  • Mar only: Grocery and drug stores (limit TBD). Signup starts Feb 1st.
  • Apr – Jun: Home improvement, department, and clothing stores (limit TBD). Signup starts Mar 1st.
  • Jul – Sep: Gas, hotels, movies, theme parks (limit TBD). Signup starts Jun 1st.
