Q: I need to get a root canal and a crown but can’t afford the $2,200 price. Do you know if there is a credit card for dental work that I could use?

A: As far as there being a specific credit card for dental work, there are none that currently exist. As you pointed out, unfortunately dental work is expensive and even if you are enrolled in one of the dental insurance plans, they often require up to 50% out of pocket in addition to low caps of around $1,000 on yearly benefits. So either way, we’re always left footing the lions share of the bill.

Here are two options to consider:

(1) CareCredit through GE - This is a health care credit card accepted by some dentists however I’m strongly against it. Why? Because they usually advertise 12 months deferred interest but guess what happens if you don’t pay every single dollar of the entire balance before the 12 months is up? You will be hit with interest going back all the way to the date of transaction on the entire amount. Since CareCredit has high interest rates, their deferred financing is a very risky proposition.

(2) 0% on purchases credit card - Most dentists accepts credit cards for payment, so your best bet is probably to apply for a credit card that gives 0% on purchases for 6 to 12 months (whatever the best offer happens to be). This is clearly better than the CareCredit deferred interest promotion because with a regular credit card, you won’t be charged back interest after the promotional period ends (in other words, when using a normal credit card for dental work, it truly is 0% for X number of months).
