Scribblers at Goldman Sachs reiterated their “conviction buy” rating and £23.00 price target on the blue-chip drug maker, which develops treatments for rare diseases and conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Shire’s ADHD drugs include Intuniv and Vyvanse, with the latter seeing a 26pc increase in revenue last year to $634m (£393m). The company is also looking to expand the application of Vyvanse to other conditions, such as binge eating and schizophrenia.
Goldman was particularly upbeat about the hyperactivity opportunity, highlighting data showing the American market grew 10pc in June. “ADHD drugs are around 35pc of Shire’s total revenue base, and a key element of our thesis on Shire is our above-consensus view on its ADHD franchise,” said the broker.
Analysts described Shire as “one of the best positioned European pharmaceutical companies”, saying their revenue estimates were 4pc to 8pc ahead of company-compiled consensus, while their earnings-per-share estimates are 6pc to 7pc ahead.

Research from Alliance Trust showed that those aged between 64 and 74 were seeing living costs increase at 5.1pc a year, although official figures said that the headline rate of inflation has fallen from 4.6pc to 4.2pc using the official CPI measure.
This is because of continued rises in food prices, where inflation accelerated from 5.3pc to 6.5pc in Jun, due to higher meat, dairy and bread and cereal prices. Older people spend a greater percentage of their money on food, meaning that their cost of living is rising faster.
“Prices may have fallen in games consoles and electrical goods but the essential items that pensioners buy – namely heating and food – are still being severely affected by inflation levels, control of which continues to be in short supply,” said Ros Altmann, Director General of Saga.
Bread was one of the items that rose significantly in price last month, up nearly 10pc on last year and 2.5pc higher than last month. Oils and

Venture capital fundraising increased in the second quarter, while fewer firms benefited from the money, according to a National Venture Capital Association and Thomson Reuters report on Monday.
Nationally, 37 funds raised $2.7 billion, versus 48 funds and $2.1 billion in the second quarter of 2010, the report said. This is the fewest number of funds since 1995. Also, Accel Partners accounted for about half the amount raised.
